Today’s science lesson; Geology, more specifically plate tectonics.
- Did you know that there are three main types of mountains? Volcanic, Fold and Block. The later two are formed by convergence of two or more tectonic plates. Fold Mountains are formed by the continental crust being literally folded by the convergence of two continents. Block Mountains are formed when large amounts of bedrock and crust are forced upwards.
- The Himalaya’s, the tallest mountain range in the world, are being still being formed. They are made possible by the Indian plate colliding with the Eurasian plate. The Andes and the Alps are being formed by the same circumstances; the Nazca plate colliding with the South American plate and the Alps by African plate colliding with the Eurasian plate, respectively.
- Africa is splitting apart. There is a rift valley forming in east Africa as a result. The red sea exists because of this divergence. The Arabian peninsula was once part of the African continent.
- The Appalachian mountains are a very old mountain range(approximately 480 million years old) and we’re formed as a result of the creation of Pangaea. It is estimated that they were once higher than the Himalayan but are so small due to erosion over time. They were once part of a larger mountain chain, the remnants of which can be found in northwest South America and west Africa.
- California is NOT going to fall into the ocean because or an earthquake or any other circumstance.
